Charles Leclerc signed a pole position that no one was waiting for this Saturday at the Hungarian Grand Prix, and the first surprised was the Monegasque himself! Asked after having come down from his car, he confirmed that he did not imagine signing such a result on the Hungarring.
After three free sessions dominated by the McLaren, during which he had always been third, the Ferrari pilot managed to surprise Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris after a very fast tour.
“Today I do not understand anything about Formula 1! The qualification was extremely difficult and I am not exaggerating. It was difficult for us to go to Q2, difficult to go to Q3, and I had to take a clean tour to target third place, but it is the pole position. I really did not expect that” said Leclerc.
“I had little support and when the rain started at the beginning of Q2 I hoped that it would not remain, and that was not the case. The conditions changed, it made things trashy and in the end, we are in pole position. I do not have the words, it is one of my most beautiful pole positions because it is the most unexpected.”
Now, he will have to deal with the two candidates in the world title behind him at the start, and with MCL39 at the rate of upper race and the degradation of tires less than that of his SF-25.
“The departure and the first turn will be the key, I don’t know how it will happen, but I will do everything to keep the first place. If I succeed, it should make my life easier for the rest of the race.”
