Essay – The Yamaha Tracer 7 and trace 7 GT, beautiful invitations to travel

Test Yamaha

After almost 300 kilometers traveled drum and more than 6 actual hours spent behind the handlebars, we were able to get a very good idea of the dynamic capacities of the last developments of the Tracer 7 and trace 7 GT. While the 2025 vintage gives, with all the updates and the changes that have been made?

The mountain roads of the Douro valley in Portugal served as a first justice of the peace.

What is new

Drawing 7 and 7 GTs represent the entry into the range Sport Touring From the brand to the three tuning forks, a segment which constitutes almost a quarter of sales. Suffice to say that these are two strategic models for Yamaha.

This line of tracer 7 appeared in 2016 and was refined since, accumulating more than 60,000 units sold. For 2025, the changes were numerous, both cosmetic and depth. All of these modifications are explained in our presentation (read our article).

Tracer 7 GT
On the left, drawing 7 GT, recognizable by its golden fork. And on the left tracer 7 short.

The most striking are undoubtedly the passage to a more sporty/modern front axle (braking revised with radial fixing calipers making “work” a Kayaba inverted fork of 41 mm in diameter) and the arrival of an electronic accelerator “Ride by Wire»Louted with new piloting assistance.

The changes in the cycle part go in the direction of greater rigidity and stability (inverted fork, an extended oscillating arm of 40 mm, torsional rigidity increased by 13%).

Only invariable in this anthology of modifications which go from the bow to the stern, the engine. The CP2 crossplane caliber bicyclinder remains roughly unchanged (while becoming compatible with Euro5+), with its 690 cc, its 73 horsepower (at 8750 rpm) and its 68 nm of torque (at 6500 rpm) enclosed in a cycle part which evolves towards more rigidity and performance.

Tracer 7 GT CP2
The CP2 engine from Yamaha was just slightly revised, including the arrival of an electronic accelerator and driving modes. Its torque and power values are unchanged. The exhaust outlet has also been modified (more compact).

To feed the CP2, the fuel tank now takes 18 liters, one more, but it is also finer at the thighs. With a standardized consumption of 4.1 l/100km, you could almost flirt with the 400 kilometers of autonomy.

Thus modified, the tracer 7 took overweight with a mass all full of 203 kg (+5 kg) for the standard version and 212 kg (+10) for the GT. The original equipment on the GT also includes heated handles, a higher bubble, side suitcases, a higher and more classy saddle.

By the way, there is a revamping of the front part of the model, and its headlights, for visual harmonization with the other models of the Tracer family.

Tracer 7 GT
On the 7 GT tracer, the suitcases are standard, just like the Touring windshield, the heating handles, the comfort saddle and the central crutch.

Yamaha Europe lets us know that tracing 7 with automated clutch (Y-AMT, read our sister MT-07 trial with this option) will be available a little later in the season. The manufacturer also insists that it is a motorcycle that has been designed, developed and manufactured in Europe. A specific model at the old continent: “By Europeans, for Europeans“, somehow.

First laps

Using identification photo carried out (with our equipment), we get to know our mounts. We will change, go from one to the other with each coffee break, in order to better understand the character of each.

I start with the GT, in gray livery and golden anodized fork (color “Icon Performance»). From the height of his 173cm, your servant puts the front of his feet on the ground, at a stop. Start: a small cozy hammer is heard, which becomes more nervous by going up in the towers.

First group to leave, we leave the hotel complex by a big descent on the cobblestones. Orders fall well on hand, it rolls up. The agility and liveliness, preserved, make low -speed changes a simple formality.

Tracer 7 GT

We cross the villages, the small cities. The roads are coated with unequal roads: holes, bumps, cracks from time to time, and sometimes leaves or bark of eucalyptus trunk. In front, the printed pace is already solid. The handling is obvious, immediate, which makes it possible to focus attention on the road.

I go into mode “Sport“, Which does not generate too much jerk, while allowing a more lively response to the handful of gas, and will keep it throughout the day. It turns. We leave the villages for small roads. It twirls. I am. It investigates well in front.

The rhythm, perceptibly, increases. The motorcycle absorbs road inequalities without disuniting. The braking is progressive and powerful, with a good feeling and bite.

Tracer 7 GT TFT
The new dashboard is more complete than the previous one, which was already a TFT.

The landscape is of a beautiful rurality, we turn around, we bypass, we span the douro. Then we cross vineyards and olive fields. And eucalyptus (again), then sides of burnt hills. We have a formal ban on smoking outside the breaks.

The turns follow one another, pure happiness than sending large gas, feel the push and the groan of the CP2, brake, stabilize the motorcycle before “swinging” in the turn almost without ulterior motive. Or accompany the curve gently, with the handlebars and the footrests.

The fork collects, the suspensions are significant. The additional mass of the GT does not (too) feel: the whole is balanced and the attention is directed towards the safety trajectory and the group in front …

Tracer 7 GT
For the first time, an inverted fork on trace 7. And braking also becomes more sporty.

For life on board, the new TFT Colors screen is well readable and offers different themes. We even have our career on the navigation window, via an app on a smartphone, but not in full screen. The indications given are clear.

A USB-C socket is available on the left side of the dashboard to connect external electronics.

Break in this coffee below a village, time to swallow sparkling water, to do a small interview and you change the mount. I continue on the Standard Tracer 7, in colors “Redline».

When the pace increases

We hit the road, the spaces emerge and the gas handles openly open. The landscapes parade. More and more quickly. The pace is accelerating. No time to test the cruise control, presented as ” Simple and intuitive » !

It is realized that all the improvements made to the guest part (brakes, frame/oscillating arm, suspensions) bring more stability, without hindering too much the agility and liveliness which are the signature of the tracer 7.

We rock the motorcycle always without ulterior motives, allowing ourselves even to wiggle, helped in this by the flexible but well granted suspensions and the flawless grip of the Michelin Pilot Road 6.

The curves are linked to the handlebars of the standard 7 tracer, redline color.

The bumps and the holes on the trajectory are absorbed or even ignored, the motorcycle does not disunte and remains perfectly wedged, the gaze already on the next rope point.

The tracer remains neutral, even during powerful and late brains. As for the latter (braking), it has been fully improved, both in feeling and power. And the fork plunges but not so excessively when you shoot the lever like a inch. A final word on on -board electronics (ABS, TCS, etc.), well calibrated and not too intrusive.

Tracer 7 convenience
Orders have become more sophisticated. The adjustable cruise control, to the left of the handlebars, is part of the standard equipment on the two variants of the model.

This CP2 engine is a small pearl, we knew it, whether it was enclosed in the MT-07 roadster, the R7 sportswoman, the Ténéré trail or in the tracer, as is the case here-it is both flexible, sparkling and very voluntary.

No need to whip him high in the towers so he is full like an egg down and in the middle. And it allows you to vigorously extricate small turns or large curves swallowed to the cleat … in a very raucous and fairly enjoyable rumble.

tracer 7 GT

We can well measure the gases presentation, more finely thanks to the Ride by Wire. This experience could have been even more jubilant, even sublimated, with the presence of a series of a shifterat least on the GT. It will be found for the first time on this model in the catalog of accessories.

Then, we arrive on a dream landscape, on roads at the magic flow but which do not forgive the slightest trajectory error. We are in the mountains, around 1100 m altitude.

The air is already fresher, large clouds arrive, gray first, then more and more threatening. The grip is good and the suspensions, conciliatory.

We attack, the ravine and the void on the right ready to welcome you, we are punctuated by the hammering of the twin -cylinder full of character, which turns into a resonant growl on the walls. The shoot on the narrow balcony roads also made it possible to check the turning radius of the two motorcycles: everyone was able to turn around without the slightest concern. And, barely the finished session, we resume our more than sustained rhythm (euphemism!).

At the end of the

Despite the rather frenzied pace and the scorching mercury, I remain (relatively) fresh. I did not have to fight with the motorcycle, in addition to the other elements. There was no rodeo. There was no ants, neither in his feet nor in the hands. Only a few turbulence on the top of the helmet. Nothing fundamentally embarrassing in itself: the bubbles are adjustable on a large height beach.

After a break to make full fuel, we return to the hotel. Still fresh despite the rhythm of hell and the pre-stingy heat of the end of the afternoon. And disappointed that it is already over.

The sky is gently covered, the rails are close and the rhythm of the test, supported.

Under the conditions of today’s test (with rough 15% of urban, 70% of country and mountain roads, and 15% of fast tracks) and in mode “Sport», The on -board computer indicates an average consumption varying between 4.8 (standard) and 5.1 L (GT) per 100km, which would allow a range of 300 km and dust. Comfortable.

In conclusion

Tracer 7 that I had for three weeks in 2020 can be proud of its descendant: it has matured well, while keeping the soul of its ancestor. The 2025 model is always “easy”, it is now more placed on its wheels, less hectic, more balanced, while keeping this valiant and sparkling heart that is CP2.

In short, it is a very decent proposal, and a very nice invitation for novices as for the most experienced and experienced, both for everyday life (job/motorcycle/dodo) that long -term trips. Towards more distant horizons. Alone. Or not.

Tracer 7

What if he had to stay only one of these two twin sisters? You will have guessed it, my favorite remains trace 7 GT, with the shifter bidirectional and equipped with a top case.

Other accessories are available, of course, such as a tank bag, or a more athletic gateway.

The tracer 7 2025 is available from July 2025, in black or red, at the price of 10,490 francs in Switzerland, and it is the same thing to draw it 7 GT, from 11990 francs, in silver or in black. It is recalled that the Swiss guarantee of Yamaha is now 5 years.
