The city of Cân Tho, in the Mekong Delta, recorded nearly 200 cases of Dengue in July, reaching the alert threshold of an epidemic in the community, according to the City Control and Prevention Center.

The number of dengue cases jumped at around 100 cases in June, compared to an average of 40 cases per month in the first five months of the year, said the Dr Hà Tân Vinh, deputy director of the establishment.
For the only month of July, the number climbed nearly 200 cases, level of incidence requiring an urgent response, he said.
Until July 27, the city listed 1,188 cases of dengue, including 561 cases in the old Cân Tho, an increase of 226 cases compared to the same period last year. No deaths have been reported.
The pediatric hospital in the city of Cân Tho welcomed 554 patients with dengue in the first seven months of the year, an increase of 51% compared to the previous year, including 59 serious cases.
The Dr Nguyên Huynh Nhât Truong, head of the hospital dengue service, said that the number of dengue’s patients was increasing, with children aged 9 to 16 seriously sick.
The condition of patients with a second virus infection may be more serious than that of patients with the first infection, he said.
In the Mekong Delta, the province of Vinh Long also recorded nearly 2,140 cases of dengue, including 48 serious cases, during the first seven months of the year, an increase of more than 1,140 cases compared to the same period last year.
The Dr Trân Chi Crap, deputy chief of the pediatric service at Vinh Long General Hospital, said the number of patients hospitalized for Dengue had increased sharply in recent weeks.
He called on the local population to be proactive in the prevention of the disease and to quickly consult a doctor as soon as symptoms appear.
The hospital’s infectious disease service has treated nearly 150 cases of dengue in the first seven months of the year.
The Dr Nguyên Quang Vinh, deputy chief of the service, said that medical institutions can carry out tests to diagnose dengue from the appearance of the first signs of fever. It is therefore advisable to go to medical establishments to carry out these tests from the initial stage.
Early diagnosis and treatment will help reduce the risk of serious illness and death, he added.
The director of the health service of the Vinh Long province, Hô Thu Thu Hang, said that health establishments had strengthened the surveillance of the epidemic at the local level and had prepared the drugs, supplies and chemicals necessary to treat and quickly manage epidemics.
The sector was coordinated with the departments, organizations and local authorities to intensify awareness within the community and encourage residents to proactively implement prevention of the epidemic at home, she added.
