OPENAI introduces an AI model capable of running on a laptop

OPENAI, the Mother of Chatgpt, launched two new Linguistic models of AI. These two models can turn locally on a computer and therefore do not require a cloud connection.

OPENAI comes out two versions of its Linguistic model of AI: the first at 120 billion parameters (GPT-OS-150B) and the smaller other, at 20 billion parameters (GPT-OS-20B). A parameter is a variable that a model of AI uses to learn and make forecasts: the more parameters it has, the more intelligent, but also heavier the model. The bulky models incorporate much more parameters, but must turn on a robust server infrastructure. Chatgpt4, for example, has about 1.8 Billiard of parameters and therefore runs in the cloud.

However, these models are compact enough to run on a computer. However, the 120 billion parameter model requires around 80 GB of memory or a modern NVIDIA graphics card. The smaller model can turn on a classic laptop only 16 GB of RAM, but it is less powerful.

Open model

This is the first ‘Open Weight’ model in Openai for six years. These models are customizable. Amateurs will indeed be able to modify internal orders to adapt each model to their needs. However, this does not mean that the company will publish the source code and training data.

The open models have the advantage of being able to be maintained offline, which results in a lower latency and faster response times. For some companies that prefer to avoid the disclosure of sensitive information online, they can also offer a solution to use AI implementations in a private environment.

On the other hand, an open model is more likely to be manipulated and could theoretically be exploited for illegal purposes. The launch of the models was therefore postponed in March. Openai insists that she tested the new models in depth, and that they would present no significant risk.

The American company feels obliged to get these models out in the face of the growing competition from the Chinese start-up Deepseek. Chinese AI models are indeed almost all open and, moreover, comparable in terms of performance to those of American origin.
