An employee of the CDC, who left the building to go home, told CNN to have seen a man approaching the entrance, lay a backpack on the ground, take out several rifles and shoot the building “for several minutes”. Witnesses, interviewed by the Associated Press, also reported several shots. “It looked like fireworks that broke out one after the other,” said the manager of a grocery store, located near the campus.
Quickly after the first alerts, CDC buildings, as well as Emory University and a nearby crèche were confined. After the shooting, the 92 children from the daycare were evacuated safely and found their families in a neighboring school. Many police officers, including the FBI, were deployed on the spot. No civilian was injured according to the authorities.

Nevertheless, a police officer from the county of Dekalb, who intervened on the scene, was reached by bullet. Transported in an emergency to the hospital, he died of his injuries.
