During the past year, Lidl Switzerland has considerably strengthened its role as exporter of Swiss specialties. The company recorded in 2024 the strongest growth in cheese export since its entry into the market. In addition, the retailer has delivered a new category of products abroad.
During the 2024 calendar year, Lidl Switzerland recorded the strongest growth in its exports in 15 years and further strengthened its role as an important export partner for Swiss food producers. With an export volume of 4021 tonnes of cheese, the retailer was able to increase the volume of the previous year by almost 1000 tonnes. The company thus creates a new distribution channel for Swiss cheese factories.
Despite a difficult context in the cheese sector, Lidl Switzerland continues its growth and actively supports the Swiss economy. The biggest importers of Swiss cheese for Lidl: 1. Germany, 2. Netherlands, 3. Romania, 4. Spain and 5. Hungary.
Appenzell cheese, AOP Gruyère and Cottage Cheese Organic continues to be particularly popular in other European countries. In addition, the food retailer records encouraging growth for Swiss raclette and innovative protein products.
New export category: Swiss salad sauces
While the food distributor again exported more than 550 tonnes of Rösti (Swiss specialty) in 2024, more than 50 tonnes of Swiss salad sauces were also delivered for the first time last year to different countries in which Lidl is present. LIDL Switzerland extends its export portfolio and creates additional sales possibilities for Swiss producers.
An international focused company with a deep regional anchoring
Lidl is known for its different theme weeks, an approach which allows it to bring diversity on the plate of its customers. During the themed weeks dedicated to Italy, France, Spain or even in Balkans, Lidl Switzerland thus offers typical products of the country put forward. LIDL has stores in more than 31 countries around the world, 27 of which are supplied with quality Swiss products. Thanks to its international sales network, LIDL offers Swiss food producers an additional distribution channel. Sandro Renz, sales and marketing director of Hardegger Käse AG, highlights the importance of this international presence: “Hardegger Käse AG has provided Lidl for 15 years with various Swiss cheeses and specialties. This has enabled us to develop our exports in a constant manner and conquer new markets. Lidl structures make it possible for international marketing and continuous export growth.”
