Back to school under the heat in several cantons

In a large part of German -speaking Switzerland, the children returned to school on Monday after the summer holidays. A hot week awaits them, with a mercury exceeding 30 degrees. Different measures are recommended to combat heat.

(Keystone-ATS) The children of the cantons of Argovie, Appenzell Rhodes-Etteurrent, Appenzell Rhodes-interior, Basel-Campagne, Basel-Ville, Bern (German-speaking schools), Glaris, Grisons, Obwald, Saint-Gall, Schaffhouse, Solure, Schwyz and Thurgovia begin the new school year on Monday.

This is what emerges from the documents of the Conference of Cantonal Directors of Public Instruction (CDIP). In French -speaking Switzerland, the start of the school year will be spread out next week.

Temperatures up to 31 degrees are planned in the cities of Basel and Bern, according to the Meteosuisse bulletin. On Wednesday, the thermometer should display up to 36 degrees in Basel. Due to heat, a large part of Switzerland is currently in marked or moderate danger.

Heat measurements

To combat heat in classrooms, the umbrella association of Swiss teachers (LCH) provides for various measures, recommended from 24 degrees.

It is recommended to overshadow by closing the exterior blinds, using fans to refresh air and extinguish unnecessary electrical devices so that their residual heat does not warm the air more. Regarding ventilation, the windows must be opened in particular at night or early in the morning.
