Ukraine fears that this meeting, scheduled for the time being without the participation of Volodymyr Zelensky, will lead to an agreement which would force her to give up parts of her territory to Russia.
“Russia refuses to stop the massacres and must therefore not receive rewards or advantages. And it’s not just a moral position, it’s a rational position, “said Volodymyr Zelensky on Facebook. “The concessions do not persuade a killer,” he added.
The leaders of the European Union and powers of the Old Continent still insisted that Kyiv was involved in American-Russian negotiations, a few days before the summit scheduled for Friday between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
And Volodymyr Zelensky, who will not in principle participate in this summit, urged its European allies, notably France, Germany and the United Kingdom also excluded from talks, to define a common approach. An “extraordinary meeting” in videoconference is also scheduled on Monday between foreign ministers from EU countries and their Ukrainian counterpart.
The United States Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, suggested on Sunday that the Ukrainian president could attend the summit.
“Yes, I undoubtedly think that it is possible,” replied the American diplomat to the Atlantic Alliance, which was questioned by CNN television on a possible presence of the Ukrainian head of state in Alaska.
“There is certainly no agreement if all the parties involved have not subscribed to it. And, obviously, the absolute priority is to reach the end of the war, ”argued Mr. Whitaker.
But in the end, it will be for Donald Trump to decide, warned his ambassador to NATO.
“If he believes that inviting Zelensky is the best scenario, then he will do it,” he said.
But “no decision has been made,” said the former federal prosecutor.
