Five things to know about the new disruptions expected at the Léonard crossroads on Monday

Cutchies at the Léonard crossroads and Jezus-Eik: a “shortcut” will be closed by a town

1. Why this project?

Carrefour of the ring and E411, the Léonard crossroads has dilapidated and aging tunnels. Hence a more than necessary renovation.

But peculiarity of this infrastructure, a true condensed of Belgian federalism over a few meters: the axis is used massively by the Brussels residents and Walloons but is located in Flemish territory. It is therefore Flanders that pilots and finances renovations.

The infrastructure is, as a reminder, made up of two tunnels (Ring and E411). First works were launched in 2023. In the spring of 2024, after an interregional crisis, day work finally started in the ring, with a large impact. Since March 2025 until the end of the year, the E411 axis is impacted.

2. Quel Impact The Zaventem Vers Waterloo?

The week before the start of the French -speaking school year, a new punctual phase of disturbances in the ring is therefore added to the persistent embarrassments of the E411. It is a question of renewing the safety borders of the central ring of the ring.

The impact will be felt above all in the inner ring, namely the meaning between Zaventem and Waterloo. From August 17 (8:30 p.m.) to August 24 inclusive, a band will be deleted between the Quatre-Bras and Léonard. In these two tunnels, only one way will be open.

Flemish authorities expect “long lines“Going up to Wezembeek-Oppem, even Woluwe-Saint-Étienne.

3. Quel Impact De Waterloo fresh Zaventem?

In the outdoor ring, namely between Waterloo and Zaventem, embarrassments are also planned, but more punctual. During the night (between 8:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.), only one track will be available in the outdoor ring from August 17 until August 24.

From August 19 to 20, during the day, only one track will be available in the Léonard tunnel, and only two (in place of three) between Léonard and the Quatre-Bras. The disturbances towards Zaventem are especially expected during these two days in rush hour.

4. What’s up, from the start of the school year?

After this week of ring disturbances, the Waterloo-Zaventem axis should no longer be hampered during the day. The disturbances on the E411 remain in force until the end of the year, with a single band in the Léonard tunnel towards Brussels, as has been the case since March. To which is added, on this axis, the work upstream in Jezus-Eik which should last until the summer of 2026.

Also remember that, in general, the Léonard tunnels remain closed at night, both on the ring axis and the E411 axis. The strap between Waterloo and Herrmann-Debroux is also closed at night.

New disruptions to be expected at the Léonard crossroads: the ring will soon be strongly impacted

5. When is a final end of the work?

In 2023, the end of the work had been announced for early 2025. It will ultimately be at least one year more due to “bad surprises “ discoveries during the site. Currently, the Wegen in Verkeer agents provides for a site outcome for the end of 2025.

“The current project will then lasted two and a half years in total. It is certainly not abnormal for work of this magnitude and this complexity“Recently assumed the Flemish administration.

Note also. Flanders has in its boxes, in addition to this current identical renovation, a vast redevelopment plan of the crossroads.

A project which, over the years, has found itself in a standstill. This summer, this file was politically postponed to the Greek calendars: the new investment plan (GIP) of Minister Annick de Ridder (N-VA) provides more than four billion investments for the North Ring but little budget for the ring is by 2040.
