Switzerland / France: electric cars, the current goes wrong

The share of electric vehicles sold decreased in France and Switzerland in 2024. Several brakes explain this slowdown, including the sale price, the lack of recharge infrastructure and the autonomy deemed insufficient.

Switzerland represents 0.3 % of sales at the international level and France 2.4 % at the start of 2025 whose shortness of breath is only confirmation of a year 2024 not very dynamic. For the first time, sales fell on the Helvetian side: new electric cars totaled almost 21 % of sales in 2023 against barely 19.3 % in 2024. The establishment of taxation on electric vehicles produced in Switzerland or imported, comply with the unique tax already existing on other types of motorization.

In the latest report of the Council of State of the Canton of Geneva, it is recalled that the electrification rate of the fleet of vehicles in circulation must be around 40 % in 2030 and 100 % in 2050; It was around 20 % at the end of 2024. At the European Union level, 100 % of new vehicles sold for 2035 will have to be electric, they represent in 2024 less than 14 % of market share, knowing that barely 2 % of vehicles circulating are electrified. It seems more than likely that this deadline is revised and offset over time.

New services are developing

The problem of charging equipment impacts the deployment of electric vehicles. Users are hampered by the lack of terminals near their homes and their workplaces, and by the accessibility of those existing. At the end of 2024, the Geneva industrial services (GIS) had installed and financed more than 150 electric charging stations in public access.

These terminals are part of the national MOVE network, which has 1,700 charging infrastructure throughout the confederal territory. The Electromaps site lists nearly 800 in supermarkets in particular, spread over the Haut-Savoyard territory. The network is probably more enhanced in reality, knowing that the number of operators is increasing, suggesting an exponential development in the coming months.

In addition, it is also a whole range of innovative services that are being set up, encouraging users to opt for electric. Thus Jean Lain Mobilités launches Carvita, a supplementary auto intended for electric vehicle drivers, grouping assistance, recharge, replacement mobility, exclusive benefits in concession … with the ambition to rethink mobility, revolutionizing the tools that accompany him on a daily basis.
