Tehran claims to work with Russia and China to prevent European sanctions

The Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abbas Araghchi, said Thursday that his country worked closely with China and Russia to avoid the activation of the “Snapback” mechanism envisaged by Europeans. This system would restore international sanctions against Iran if no agreement is reached by the end of August.

Tuesday, Germany, the United Kingdom and France-gathered under the name of “E3”-sent a letter to the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, denouncing an accumulation of enriched uranium “more than 40 times” greater than the limit set by the 2015 nuclear agreement. The three European capitals warn that in the absence of a negotiated solution, they will start the process leading to october. “If Iran persists in violating its international obligations, France and its German and British partners will reset at the end of August the world’s embargoes on arms, nuclear equipment and banking restrictions raised 10 years ago,” warned Jean-Noël Barrot on X.

“We have tools to react”

“If this happens, it will be negative […] We will try to prevent it […] We work with China and Russia to prevent the implementation of the Snapback, “said Abbas Araghchi on state television. The Iranian diplomacy chief also warned: “If it does not work and they apply it, we have tools to react. »»

The nuclear agreement signed in 2015, in which the United States also participated, provided for a strict limitation of Iranian nuclear activities in exchange for a gradual lifting of sanctions. But in 2018, Washington withdrew unilaterally under the chairmanship of Donald Trump, pushing Tehran to get rid of several commitments. Since then, negotiations for a new binding framework come up against persistent disagreements, while Westerners accuse Iran of wanting to acquire nuclear weapons.
