Voters are called to the ballot boxes in Battle River – Crowfoot, in Alberta, where the curator Pierre Hairyvre will try to be elected

Voters in the Battle River – Crowfoot, Alberta district are called to the ballot boxes on Monday as part of a by -election which arouses unusual national interest.

This district, which covers a rural region of Alberta, has no longer had a federal deputy since the resignation of the conservative Damien Kurek. The latter resigned to give the leader to his party, Pierre Hairyvre, to introduce himself.

Mr. Poilievre, who was defeated in his district of the Ottawa region during the general elections last spring, therefore hopes to be elected in this strong conservative castle to return to the House of Commons.

More than 200 people appear against Mr. Poilievre, most of whom are part of a protest movement called the “longest ballot committee”.

Due to the record number of candidates, voters will have to register the name of the candidate for whom they wish to vote in a virgin space on the ballot.

The polling stations will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. local time.

Elections Canada warns that the counting of votes will take more time than usual due to the unique form of the ballot.

More than 14,000 people have already voted in advance. The constituency has more than 86,000 eligible voters.
