By welcoming Antonio Iannelli, a renowned professor and specialized in obesity surgery, the South Corse clinic demonstrates its force of attractiveness – while testifying to the disturbing prevalence of obesity, especially juvenile, on island territory.
“A real size”
Antonio Iannelli, 57, has more than twenty-five years of expertise in digestive surgery. There are many commitments. Professor, he has been empowered to direct research since 2011. Listed at the Council of the Order, he coordinated multidisciplinary consultation meetings until last year at the Nice University Hospital, on digestive cancerology.
“He will not say it out of modesty, but it is a real size. He has been a performer that I have known for more than fifteen years. I have total confidence in him”testifies Doctor Jean-Marc Cucchi. This is currently the only surgeon, in Corsica-du-Sud, to carry out bariatric surgery operations.
“I have an expertise that remains average, while Pr Iannelli has much further expertise, since he does all obesity surgery. I do not do certain techniques, that he will be able to do to Ajaccio”confes Dr Cucchi.
Based in Nice, the Neapolitan surgeon was not an unknown from the South Corse private hospital. Until then, Dr. Cucchi transferred patients with “pathologies complexes”who treated them from the capital of the Riviera.
Between the walls of the clinic inaugurated this Monday, August 18, Antonio Iannelli will be able to lead “Before the end of the year” type operations “Gastric bypass”which consists in reducing the volume of the stomach by creating a small gastric pocket. “It will eventually make the Sleeve Gastrectomy Complex”adds Dr Cucchi, citing an operation intended to remove two thirds of the stomach in order to reduce its storage capacity.
The attractiveness of the “reinforced” region
“I do all complex interventions. I have experience for the second and third interventions, complications, weight loss failures …”lists the teacher, who says he is “content” to exercise a few days a month in Ajaccio. “We are now able to be on very narrow segments, with an expected high performance”is satisfied with Jean Canarelli, director of the private hospital.
The attractiveness of the clinic, a reference establishment for bariatric surgery in Corsica-du-Sud as part of the regional health project, had already distinguished itself with the arrival of Dr. Arnaud Deveze, in particular specialized in ENT surgery in the middle ear. With regard to the consolidation of his surgery service, Jean Canarelli, also president of the departmental council of the Corsican-du-Sud’s doctors, estimates that “The attractiveness of our region on these advanced services comes out of it reinforced”.
This arrival recalls the significant prevalence of this chronic disease in Corsica. Distrusting: obesity even gains ground among young people. “In Corsica, in minors, almost a quarter of children in sixth grade are overweight. It is a little above the national average”observes Jean-Marc Cucchi, referring to a thesis of the Faculty of Medicine of Nice.
This had concluded, after a survey carried out between 2022 and 2023 on a sample of 604 Corsican pupils in school in sixth grade, that the obesity rate amounted to 5.5 % among these young college students – while the rate of weight overweight culminated at 24.5 %.
