Two new Human cases of H5N1 avian influenza in Cambodia

Cambodian health authorities have confirmed two new H5N1 avian -vis -end cases, involving a 46 -year -old mother and her 16 -year -old son. The announcement was made on June 29 by the Ministry of Health in an official statement. The two patients live in the province of Siem Reap, in the immediate vicinity of another confirmed case a few days earlier.

Contamination linked to a previous case in the village of Lbaeuk

According to the ministry, they lived about 20 meters from a 41 -year -old man infected with the H5N1 virus, the diagnosis of which was established on June 23 in the village of Lbaeuk, Puok district. The two new patients have been placed under treatment with the antiviral drug Tamiflu (osltamivir) and are subject to narrow medical supervision. Their health is deemed stable at this stage.

Consumption of sick poultry before the appearance of symptoms

The health survey conducted by the authorities reveals that patients, as well as some of their neighbors, had recently cooked and consumed ducks and chickens with obvious signs of illness or dying. This practice, still common in certain rural areas, constitutes a major risk factor in human transmission to humans.

Appeal to vigilance on the part of the Ministry of Health

The Ministry of Health reiterates its calls for caution and recommends that anyone who has been in contact with sick or dead poultry quickly consult a doctor in the event of influenza symptoms within 14 days. Rapid prevention and detection are essential to limit the propagation of the virus.

A mortality always worrying in Cambodia

Since the beginning of 2025, Cambodia has recorded nine human influenza cases H5N1, five of which have resulted in death. The country remains particularly exposed to this zoonotic disease. In an interview granted in May, Dr. Ly Sovann, director of the transmitted disease control department, recalled that the H5N1 mortality rate in the country is around 60 %, a figure in accordance with global trends, where lethality generally varies between 50 and 70 %.
