Three departments placed in orange alert

Hérault, Gard and Lozère are affected by Orange Thunderstorms and rain-inondations this Tuesday, August 19 in the evening, due to the arrival of a pluvio-stormy episode from the southwest to the center-east.

After the heat wave, thunderstorms. Météo-France placed this Tuesday, August 19, three departments in orange alert to the risk of violent thunderstorms but also for rain and flood. L’Héraultthe Gard and the Lozère are concerned. The alert is issued from 4 p.m. to midnight.

Due to a cold drop on the affected territories, locally strong storms can form. Météo-France expects precipitation of around 60 to 80 millimeters in a very short time, and even between 100 and 120 millimeters of rain locally and on reliefs.

By comparison, this corresponds to one to three months of rain on these departments. In August, in the three departments placed in orange alert, the rainfall is 35 millimeters of rain.

An extension of orange vigilance not excluded

Halm drops and strong gusts of wind should accompany the bad weather.

The pluvio-storm episode is set up from the southwest to the center-east as well as in the Mediterranean regions and in Corsica. “An extension of orange vigilance is not completely excluded on certain departments of a south-eastern quarter of the country and in Corsica,” warns the meteorological service.

In parallel, no more French department is placed in orange heat wave, a first since August 8.
