Mazda Canada adapts to the turbulence of the North American automotive market. Amy Fleming, currently chief of the farm, will become CEO of Mazda Canada on October 1, 2025, replacing David Klan, who retired. Fleming stressed the importance for Mazda to remain “really agile” in the face of American prices and government mandates of zero emission vehicles (VZE).
Prices: the CX-50 collateral victim
Canada’s decision to impose 25 % reprisal tariffs on vehicles made in the United States hit the CX-50 assembled directly in Alabama, yet one of the Mazda flagship models in Canada in 2024 (15 % of sales). Result: Mazda suspended its production for the Canadian market. “We were able to swivel quickly,” says Fleming. Mazda compensated by increasing the offer of CX-5, Mazda3 and CX-30, imported from Japan and Mexico.
Upward sales despite the storm
Despite the trade war, Mazda Canada has seen its sales climbing 19.5 % since the beginning of 2025. In July, Mazda3 sales exploded 126.7 % compared to 2024, while the CX-30 increased by 18.2 %.
Vze mandates: an obstacle for Mazda
In addition to the prices, federal and provincial mandates on the Vze complicate the task of the manufacturers. From 2026, 20 % of sales of light vehicles will have to be electric, reaching 100 % in 2035. Fleming judges these “very punitive” rules, especially in Quebec and British Columbia, where Mazda holds its best market share. She also recalls that the end of the federal discounts for the VĂ©s slowed down the request. “What the Canadian market needs is a break from Vze mandates,” she insists. The Association of World Automobiles in Canada supports this claim and requires the elimination of penalties deemed excessive.
A multi-surgery to electrification
Mazda intends to offer customers a diversified range: light hybrids, conventional hybrids, rechargeable hybrids and full battery VI. The objective is an entirely electrified range by 2030.
