The wife of the Spanish Prime Minister was summoned by a judge in the context of an investigation for embezzlement, a spokesman for a Madrid court, a new episode in the business involving the entourage of Pedro Sánchez on Tuesday.
Begoña Gómez was summoned to the court to be questioned on September 11 on an alleged diversion of public funds, this spokesman told AFP without providing more details.
According to the Spanish media, the judge will try to know if an official employed in the team of the Prime Minister worked for Begoña Gómez, at the time responsible for a master’s degree at the compluten university of Madrid.
This work could be considered as a diverted use of public resources – the employee’s time and salary – for private purposes for Ms. Gómez.
Since April 2024, Begoña Gómez has also been indicted for corruption and influence traffic. The one who directed until the start of the school year 2024 a master’s degree in management at the complutense university in Madrid is suspected by the judge for having used her husband’s functions for her profit to obtain funding for her master’s degree, especially with the businessman Juan Carlos Barrabés.
Already heard in December, Ms. Gómez assured that she had “nothing to hide”. This drawing investigation gave rise to a violent showdown between the prosecution and the judge responsible for the investigation, the left and the Prime Minister castigating a defamation campaign orchestrated by the extreme right and the right -wing opposition.
The investigation was opened following complaints from two groups linked to the far right.
In July 2024, Begoña Gómez had already appeared and then argued his right to remain silent.
This investigation is one of the many corruption cases involving the circle near Sánchez, which led the opposition to regularly claim its resignation.
The Prime Minister’s former right-hand man, Santos Cerdán, ex-N.3 of the Socialist Party, was placed in pre-trial detention in June as part of an investigation into bribes linked to public contracts.
At the heart of this same investigation are also the former minister and former right-wing of the Prime Minister, José Luis ábalos, and his close adviser, Koldo García.
Pedro Sánchez’s younger brother has also been investigated since 2024 for embezzlement, influence traffic and tax fraud.
