This Monday, the round of 16 club World Cup continued in the United States. In a competition criticized both sportingly and logistically, no surprise was really there so far. While Palmeiras, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and PSG qualified for the quarters, Inter Milan should not tremble this Monday against Fluminense. In delicacy for weeks after their disappointments in the championship and in the Champions League final, the Nerazzurri had no right to make mistakes.
Little reassuring since the start of the tournament, the Lombards could be wary of the players of Rio de Janeiro who had notably snatched the draw against Borussia Dortmund during their opening match (0-0). And if the men of Christian Chivu took their opponents of the day high, the latter were responsible for showing them from the outset that they were not there to do figuration. Indeed, on his real first opportunity, Fluminense opened the scoring. After a high recovery, the latter quickly projected themselves and the center of Arias benefited German Cano who deceived Yann Sommer with a bitten head which passed between the legs of the Swiss porter (0-1, 2nd).
Inter Milan did not find the resources against Fluminense
Sounded at the entrance, the interists therefore sought to quickly react. And despite a beautiful strike from Dimarco (11th), the Italians were disturbed by the tactical rigor of the teammates of Thiago Silva. Solid, the FLU stuck in counter and was close to double the impulse without the incredible missed of Xavier against Yann Sommer (30th). Under a blazing sun, Inter Milan was close to insolation just before the break. On a clever discount of Renê, Ignacio believed to double the bet for the Brazilians. Finally, the latter was offside on the delivery of his teammate (41st). A very complicated first act for Inter Milan, on the edge of the precipice, and which ended on an altercation between Mkhitalyan and the Fluminense coach. Upon returning from the locker room, the balance of power has not necessarily changed. Embarrassed by solid Brazilians, the Inter was close to collecting a second goal on numerous occasions (57th, 63rd).
As the final whistle approaches, the Italians rushed to find the fault but their dangerous attacks were not necessarily enough to equalize (67th, 75th). The latest attempts by Lautaro Martinez (81st, 82nd) did not allow Inter to achieve it either. To make sure, the Inter was still caught off guard at the end of the match. On a touch, Carboni missed his intervention. This took advantage of Hercules Pereira who deceived Yann Sommer of a limpid strike from the left (0-2, 90+3rd). At the end of a valiant meeting, Fluminense went to get his ticket for the quarter -finals of the CDM of the clubs by ousting the finalist of the last Champions League. A real disillusionment for nerazzurri, definitely in difficulty in recent weeks.
