The Montreal Canadians have passed on negotiation rights with goalkeeper Cayden Primeau at the Hurricanes from Caroline on Monday evening, in return for a 7th round choice in 2026.
A little earlier in the day, the Canadians had submitted a qualifying offer to Primeau in order to retain his rights, rather than letting him become an autonomous player without compensation on Tuesday.
This transaction therefore signals the end of a course in roller coaster in the Canadiens uniform for the primer since its selection in the seventh round of the 2017 draft.
After two seasons full of promises in the NCAA between 2017 and 2019, Primeau joined the Rocket de Laval in 2019-2020, quickly becoming goalkeeper No. 1 of the Lavalloise training with 33 games.
He made his debut in the NHL on December 5, 2019, in a 3-2 setback against the Avalanche du Colorado. Less than a week later, a performance of 35 stops allowed him to obtain his first gain.
The following years were more difficult for the Primeau, which commute between Montreal and Laval due to the problems of Tricolor goalkeeper.
This use sometimes seemed to harm its development. Good performances in the American League were tainted by ordinary performance in the NHL.
Primeau then initiated the 2023-2024 season in a three-guarded bearing with Samuel Montembeault and Jake Allen, before the latter was exchanged at the Devils of New Jersey.
Last season, however, he was unable to seize his chance of becoming goalkeeper No. 2 of CH with a 2-3-1 file, an average of goals allocated of 4.70 and an efficiency of, 836 in 11 games.
He finished the season with the Rocket, where he shone with a file of 21-2-2, an average of goals allocated of 1.96 and an efficiency of, 927 in 26 outings.
In total, in 55 NHL games, Primeau presents a 13-24-7 file as well as a MBA of 3.69 and an efficiency rate of, 884.
