The ministry in charge of research and innovation announced this Friday, August 22, 2025, in a press release, the final judgment of the activities of the Target Malaria project throughout Burkinabè territory.
According to the press release, all the speakers containing genetically modified mosquitoes have been placed under sealed since August 18, 2025. In addition, the samples will be destroyed in accordance with the indicated protocol.
Regarding genetically modified male mosquitoes, without genetic impulse, which had been released in the village of Souroukoudingan, province of Houet, Guiriko region, the ministry ensures that they were “carefully treated” by the competent technical services.
This research project, carried out for several years as part of the fight against malaria, has often aroused debates in Burkina Faso, in particular on issues of biosecurity, scientific transparency and consent of local populations.
As a reminder, on Thursday, August 21, the monitoring coalition on the biotechnological activities of Burkina Faso denounced the releases of mosquitoes and expressed its concerns concerning the Target Malaria project.
