Minister DIAB declaration on the occasion of Canada’s Day

Statement

Halifax, July 1, 2025 – The Honorable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, made the following statement on the occasion of Canada’s Day:

“Canada Day is an opportunity to think about our identity as a country and to celebrate the people, cultures and values that unite us. From one ocean to another, Canadians can emphasize this day with pride, with our common commitment to democracy, equality and a better future.

The history of Canada has not started with the Confederation, when we have become a country. It started with the indigenous peoples who have taken care of their land and their territories since time immemorial. We celebrate Canada that we know today, but must also honor and recognize the lasting contributions of the first peoples of this country and learn more about their history, their traditions and their cultures. Let us continue to work together to build a future based on mutual understanding, respect and justice.

Today, I am honored to attend a citizenship ceremony at the Canadian Immigration Museum on the Quai 21. Many similar ceremonies will take place this year: highlights that testify to the resilience, hope and dreams of those who have chosen Canada as homeland. As a proud Canadian of Lebanese origin and daughter of immigrants, I know for experience what courage it takes to build a new life in a new country. I encourage you to attend a citizenship ceremony in your community and to share the pride and joy of these important steps.

Being Canadian is more than a passport or a status. It is actively participating in our communities, to open up in various cultures, to advance reconciliation with the indigenous peoples and to unite around a common objective. Whether by volunteering, by voting or simply welcoming a neighbor, each gesture strengthens our nation.

On the occasion of Canada’s Day, let’s celebrate the values that unite and renew our commitment to building a country where everyone has their place and can flourish. For information on celebrations near you, see the Canadian Heritage Website.

“Happy Canada Day to all people who consider this wonderful country as their home!” »»
