A new case confirmed in the province of Siem Reap
A 36-year-old woman, living in the province of Siem Reap, in the northwest of Cambodia, was tested positive for the H5N1 virus of avian flu, the Cambodian health ministry announced on Tuesday. This new case brings the total number of human infections recorded to 11 since the beginning of 2025, five of which were fatal.
Symptoms and patient medical care
According to an official press release, the diagnosis was confirmed on June 30 by the laboratory of the Institut Pasteur du Cambodge. The patient had symptoms typical of the virus, including fever, cough and breathing difficulties. It is currently being taken care of by a specialized medical team.
Contamination linked to infected poultry
The infected woman lies in the village of Doun Keo, located in the Puok district. Sick and dead poultry were found at his home. She would have been in direct contact with these animals and would have proceeded to their burial, which could be the cause of the infection.
Reinforced monitoring and prevention measures
The health authorities have launched an investigation to identify the exact origin of the contamination and identify any suspicious cases in the entourage of the victim. Their objective is to avoid any propagation of the virus within the community.
The ministry also indicated that people who have had direct contact with the patient received OSELTAMIVIR (Tamiflu), an antiviral commonly used to limit the transmission of avian flu.
Epidemiological situation in 2025
Since the beginning of the year, Cambodia has identified 11 human influenza human cases H5N1. Five of these infections led to death, according to data provided by the Ministry of Health.
