When a Lausanne farm becomes laboratory of sustainability
Wood of municipal forests, straw in the estate and solar roof: the renovation of Rovéréaz embodies the ecological ambitions of Lausanne.
The renovation work of the Rovéréaz agricultural field has officially started, as the municipality of Lausanne announces in a statement published this Wednesday. This major project, approved by the municipal council in early 2024, aims to modernize the first municipal area spent in organic farming while preserving its heritage character.
The works, which will be completed in 2026, provide for a complete transformation of the existing rural. The project includes the development of storage and processing spaces, the creation of a direct sales space and the installation of a solar roof of 230 m² estimated capable of producing 48,000 kWh per year. This production will cover all the energy needs of the building. Accessibility to the domain will also be improved with the creation of aid to crossing and upgrading to PMR of bus stops.
An ecological approach
The site is distinguished by the use of local and durable materials. The new frame will be built with wood from municipal forests, while insulation will be carried out with straw produced on the very domain. Terracotta bricks will complement these ecological choices. “This project is exemplary: it is not only a question of adapting a farm to the current needs, but of building a place which embodies the ecological transition,” underlines Natacha Litzistorf, director of housing, the environment and architecture.
Throughout the renovation period, the field will continue its activities. The direct sales store has been temporarily moved to an annexed building and remains accessible to the public. Agricultural activities normally continue, as is the educational programs offered by the Jardin Aux 1000 Main association. The inauguration of the renovated rural is scheduled for early 2026.
