Furthermore, friborg: university under pressure its This is what a petition for young people from the Popular Workers’ Party (POP) in Friborg. In addition, student coordination for Palestine (CEP), this Tuesday handed over to the rectorate of the University of Friborg (UNIFR). With more than 750 signatures. it asks the institution to imitate the universities of Geneva et Lausannewho both interrupted certain collaborations with their Israeli partners.
This claim occurs a week after the rector. Katharina Fromm, announced that the UNIFR would not turn his back on the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, causing the ire of Propalestinian activists. She did not see the usefulness of it. because no student or researcher benefits from the exchange agreement which links the two establishments at the moment.
This program, funded by the Jean and Bluette Nordmann Foundationaims to strengthen Judeo-Christian dialogue. In place since friborg: university under pressure its 2011. it allows students of Master, Postdoctorants and Professors of all disciplinary backgrounds to make a stay of one or two semesters in Jerusalem.
Unlike academic stays, scientific collaboration is always very active. Several studies, including a biology project of plants involving Israeli researchers, are still underway.
Public apology for “repression”
An “intolerable” position for the authors of the petition. By refusing to cut its links with Israel. the UNIFR would provide “symbolic support for the Israeli State in its genocide”. In addition to immediately ending this partnership with Jerusalem. the signatories ask the Alma Mater Mater Friborg not to conclude any new agreement with Israeli institutions “as long as the apartheid continues”.
The petition – supported by students. teachers, members of university staff but also citizens outside the friborg: university under pressure its campus – also requires public apology “for the repression carried out in the spring of 2024”, when the UNIFR had called on the police to dislodge the demonstrators who occupied a building of the establishment, as well as the realization of an audit on potential problematic partnerships with regard to international law.
The petitioners insist on the counter-current swimming of the UNIFR: “Friborg remains alone. in French-speaking Switzerland to maintain a link with an Israeli institution.” By opting for the status quo “even though the Swiss academic world begins to open its eyes”. the UNIFR would isolate itself “in an untenable posture”.
