The collaboration between Sony and AMD is becoming clearer: the Amethyst project will be just as beneficial for the PS5 PRO and the PS6 as for future AMD graphic architectures.
The Amethyst project which brings together Sony and AMD is already bearing fruit in the graphic architecture of the PS5 Pro. The two actors met around a common objective of improving the integration of AI into real -time games, both on PC and console.
While we learned that the PS5 PRO would accommodate a complete portage of AMD FSR 4 technology in 2026, we know a little more about this collaboration which goes far beyond the PlayStation sphere. Mark Cerny from Sony as well as Jack Huynh and Jeff Connell of AMD answered questions from Tom’s Guide To find out more about this famous Amethyst project.
A beneficial partnership for the PC game
Sony and AMD are now working hand in hand in a mutually beneficial collaboration for the two actors. According to Mark Cerny, architecture of the PS5, the PlayStation teams help AMD generate complex and detailed 3D scenes for their different tests. Sony also assists AMD in the design of its Upscaling technology, with regular feedback on the different iterations of the algorithm.
Cerny, however, wants to emphasize that it is not a ” owner technology “And says he wants” advance industry“. Thus, this work thus allowed the launch of the FSR 4 at the start of the year and will be the basis of future versions of the algorithm, both on PC and consoles.
PS6 objective
The article also reveals Sony’s direct influence on future AMD graphics cards. Marc Cerny declares “big pieces of RDNA 5, or whatever the name that AMD will give him, come from engineering work” which he performs on the Amethyst project. We are talking about Upscaling here, but also of Ray Tracing, which was one of the three main priorities of the PS5 Pro.
The objective is not surprisingly the design of the PS6 while Cerny declares ” Prepare for the next generation of consoles“. The PS5 PRO is therefore just a test gallop.
