In Marseille, an ex-assistant to the mayor sentenced to violence against LFI activists

Sébastien Jibrayel, in Marseille, August 13, 2020.

Sébastien Jibrayel, elected representative of the Socialist Party (PS) in the municipal majority in Marseille, was sentenced on Thursday July 3 to suspended prison but without ineligibility for violence against two militants of rebellious France (LFI) who glued posters.

The Marseille Criminal Court pronounced a sentence of a year in suspended prison with a fine of 5,000 euros against this former assistant. This case had led in March the various left mayor Benoît Payan to suspend the delegation of sports assistant to Mr. Jibrayel and all of his municipal responsibilities pending this judgment.

“The pronounced sentence is much lower than the sentence that had been required and all the more so that it was not condemned to an ineligibility penalty”underlines his lawyer, Benjamin Liautaud. At the hearing of May 23, the prosecutor had requested twenty-four months suspended prison sentence against him and the deprivation of civil rights for three years. He was prosecuted, with his father Henri Jibrayel, former socialist deputy, and two other men for acts of violence in a meeting that led to a temporary incapacity for work not exceeding eight days against two LFI activists on January 18.

Henri Jibrayel sentenced to six months in prison

On video surveillance images, viewed during the hearing, two LFI activists take off posters in front of a school. A crowd is then created around them, and one of the activists is beaten: slaps, punches and kicks. The facts had taken place in the district of the deputy LFI of Marseille Sébastien Delogu, who had denounced in a statement on January 18 violence “Intolerable”.

Sébastien and Henri Jibrayel, absent from the court for the pronouncement of the judgment, appear in the images, arriving by car, mixing with the crowd, before leaving. Henri Jibrayel was sentenced to six months suspended prison sentence, such as Lyece Choulak, district councilor of the 15e et 16e districts of Marseille. The fourth man prosecuted in this file was sentenced to one year suspended prison suspended from a suspended probationary for three years and a fine of 500 euros.

For their part, the civil parties take “ACTE” of these condemnations lower than the requisitions while saying “Satisfied with having been recognized as victims of all the facts, all the defendants who have brought to our customers”reacts the lawyer for LFI activists, Yones Taguelmint, just after the deliberation.
