Febelfin and Itsme alert against scams by psychological manipulation during the summer

These frauds, say “social engineering“, consist in pretending to be banks, public services or Card Stop in order to push the victim to approve an action which she did not initiate himself in the application.

The fraudster often evokes an emergency, such as a suspicious activity, a blocked account or a refund to validate, to encourage the victim to open the ITSME application and to validate a fraudulent transaction.

Among the frequent scams, a crook pretends to be a banking employee and claims to check the identity of the customer via ITSME. In reality, the victim authorizes the fraudster to access his online banking space. “”It is essential to never approve an action in itsme that you have not triggered yourself“, insistent Febelfin et Belgian Mobile ID.

In the event of an unexpected request, it is recommended to refuse it immediately, to read the validation screen carefully and to check the details before any action.

Neither the banks, nor itsme, nor Card Stop ask to validate an emergency via the application, recall the two organizations, which invite the public to redouble vigilance, in particular during the holidays. On average, 1.3 million identification actions are carried out each day with the ITSME application, for a total of 473 million identification shares in 2024.
