Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Aarhus on Thursday morning in western Denmark for the start of the Danish Presidency of the European Union. This was announced by the Danish government in a statement.
(Keystone-ATS) “The Danish presidency will do everything possible to help Ukraine in its career towards membership in the EU,” said Prime Minister Put Frederiksen, one of the most fervent European support in Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion.
The arrival of Mr. Zelensky in Denmark comes at a time when the United States announced the cessation of the delivery of certain weapons to Ukraine. “We must strengthen Ukraine on the one hand, and weaken Russia on the other hand,” added the Danish leader, quoted in the press release.
“We do so by increasing military support, because Ukraine is essential for the security of Europe,” insisted Ms. Frederiksen, at the head of the Danish government since 2019. She highlighted the need to “intensify the pressure” on Moscow with new sanctions.
In addition to Ms. Frederiksen, Mr. Zelensky will meet in Aarhus the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen and the president of the European Council Antonio Costa.
Security priority
Copenhagen made the security of the European continent, which it links in particular to a strict migration policy, one of the priorities of its presidency.
However, Denmark wants to advance the European plan presented in March to increase the defense capacities of the EU countries, via facilitated procedures and loans made available to States to finance investments in the European defense industry.
