The cases of infectious diseases of the northwest are greater than the provincial average

In 2024, the listed cases of infectious diseases in northwestern Ontario were greater than the provincial average.

This is what stands out of tables and graphics published on the sidelines of the annual deposit of the Northwest Health Bureau Annual Report on Wednesday.

Cases of blastomycosis in the northwest represent almost a third (31.8 %) of all cases listed in the provinces.

Certain localities on the territory served by the northwest health office such as Kenora, Sioux Lookout and Rainy River have been identified as the main outbreaks of the province.

The Invasive Streptococcus bacteria has an infection rate of 71.9 per slice of 100,000 inhabitants unlike the rest of Ontario which records a rate of 11.0.

The rate of infection in the northwest of the province for another respiratory bacteria, the Streptococcus pneumoniae invasive, is 34.1 cases per 100,000 people, unlike a provincial average of 11.3.

Cases of hepatitis C are also much more frequent in the north of the province.

According to data from the northwest health office, 141.4 cases are listed per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to the Ontario average of 19.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

On the other hand, the cases of Giardia are lower in the northwest with an average of 6.1 per slice of 100,000 inhabitants while the provincial average is 8.2.

High number of sexually transmitted infections

Sexually transmitted infections are also more frequent in the northwest than elsewhere in Ontario, according to data from the northwest health office.

The cases listed in 2024 of syphilis and gonorrhea are almost three times higher.

The number of cases of syphilis in the northwest is 118.2 per slice of 100,000 people unlike the Ontario average of 33.3, while Gonorrhea reaches 235.3 cases per 100,000 people in this same part of the province, unlike the provincial average of 84.9.

Data published by the northwest health office in 2023 also indicated that the alcohol-related emergency tours was 13 times higher in the northwest of the province.
