By checking this simple detail, it is impossible to be wrong by buying a melon at the supermarket, expert word!
The melons season is in full swing. And this fruit, consumed both as a starter and in dessert, is one of the stars on our plates. According to INSEE, French households consume an average of 6 kg of melon per year. But in these six kilos per household, not all the fruits were tasted with the same satisfaction. While they are sweet and moisturizing when they are ripe, the melons can also have an alcoholic or rancid taste when they are not good.
Expert in the field, the Italian primeur Flavio Flavetta shared a precious and little known advice for choosing a good melon “every time”. According to him, no need to feel, touch, or even weigh the fruit. One glance is enough to know if a melon is ripe or not. “You have to look at the small green lines all around the fruit,” he explains. “Some are clearer, others darker.”
In this case, which should be chosen? “If the lines are intense green, you will not eat the melon today,” warns the premiere, author of the book of cooking entitled “any of the fruita”. Choosing a melon whose small lines are still dark can be a good idea, but only if you plan to keep it a few days before eating it. Conversely, if you plan to taste it as soon as you return home, it is better to choose a melon whose vertical lines are clearer, because they indicate that the melon is well mature.
To help consumers with whom doubt persists even after this tip, the Italian specialist advises to check the small tasks present on the bark. “Remember that when they are dry, it means that the melon has maturation and it is therefore full of sugar.” If they are slightly damp or soft, it is better to avoid buying the fruit. An unstoppable technique!
Accompanied by a slice of dry ham or a few watermelon cubes, the melon is generally very good for health. Composed of 90 % water, the latter also contains vitamin C, calcium, potassium and provitamin A, essential in the vision mechanism. In addition, regular melon consumption in summer promotes good intestinal transit. Enjoy your food !
