Six people hospitalized for contamination by botulism in Maine-et-Loire

Six people have been hospitalized for several days for “Severe symptoms” After contamination by botulism in Maine-et-Loire, said the Regional Health Agency (ARS) in the Pays de la Loire. According to an ARS press release, these people were hospitalized between July 7 and 14. “These are couples of retired people who shared, at different times, a carrot cake made from carrots put in jar by one of the couples”ARS said to AFP in the countries of the law

“Research continues to find out how many people in the family and friendly sphere has also consumed these foods”said the ARS in its press release, specifying that “none of these foods has been marketed.”

The ARS did not wish to communicate on the current state of health of hospitalized people.

Botulism is a rare and serious neurological condition, fatal in 5 to 10% of cases, caused by a very powerful toxin produced by a bacteria that develops in poorly preserved foods, for lack of sufficient sterilization.

In September 2024, five thirty-something had been hospitalized in serious condition following a birthday meal during which they had consumed preserves of pesto at the bear’s garlic, in Indre-et-Loire.

In September 2023, sixteen customers, including a woman who died, were identified as “cases of botulism” After eating preserves in handcrafted sardines in a tourist restaurant in the center of Bordeaux.
