Unknowns have stolen a historic ring in a Basel museum. A gift made in 1814 by the Russian Tsar Alexandre I to his Basel host was at the origin of the stolen object.

The ring was in a showcase equipped with an alarm system, the Haus Zum Kirchgarten museum said on Tuesday that found the flight at the end of May and filed a complaint immediately. Internal checks suggest that the flight was not noticed immediately.

The historic museum of Basel, to which the institution concerned belongs, decided, in agreement with the public prosecutor to make this crime public after the first measures of the investigation remained unsuccessful. He also recorded the ring in the international database of missing cultural goods and initiated an analysis as well as measures intended to strengthen his security.

War against Napoleon

The historical value of the stolen ring is higher than its material value, indicates the institution without giving more details. The object integrated in 1950 into the collection of the historical museum bears the initials “BM”.

In the years 1813/1814 Tsar Alexandre I (1777-1825), his army and his Austrian and Prussian allies crossed Basel during their war against Napoleon I. The Russian monarch was housed at Segerhof, an old monastery. As a recognition, he would have offered a spindle to the mistress of the place, Dorothea Burckhardt-Merian. This pin was transformed into a ring thereafter. (JZS/ATS)
