Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta sign an agreement to make a pipeline

Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta signed an agreement on Tuesday, in order to build new oil pipelines, railways and other energy and commercial infrastructures.

The announcement was made by the Prime Ministers Doug Ford, Scott Moe and Danielle Smith on the sidelines of the discussions of the Federation of the Federation, which is held in Huntsville, Ontario.

The provincial prime ministers gathered in the Ontario chalet region to discuss the elimination of internal trade barriers and the threat of US President Donald Trump to impose 35 % customs prices on August 1 on a wide range of Canadian products.

CBC News Asked the three provincial prime ministers if Canada had to replace line 5 – a pipeline of more than 1,000 kilometers carrying 540,000 barrels of liquid oil and natural gas every day across Wisconsin and Michigan to the Sarnia refineries, Ontario – even if there was no private promoter who would support such a project.

I believe it, yes, replied Doug Ford. Michigan governor is constantly threatening to cut line 5. This would practically close our airports and paralyze a large part of Ontario. We can no longer take this risk. We must be independent, we need a pipeline that goes southwest from Ontario to one of the refineries, and be autonomous.

We can no longer count on Americans. It’s as simple as that.

A quote from Doug Ford, Prime Minister of Ontario

In 2023, an American court agreed to the Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa And ordered Enbridge to close the pipeline sections within three years, as well as to pay US $ 5.2 million to the Aboriginal group to have empiety on their land after the expiration of the rights of servitude.

The Canadian government argued in May 2023 that a closure of this line-in service since 1953-would violate a Canadian-American agreement of 1977 on pipelines, according to which the two countries undertook not to block the mutual delivery of their hydrocarbons.

Enbridge also wishes to build a protective tunnel around a 5.8 -kilometer section of the pipeline which passes under the Strait of Mackinac, connecting Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. In the United States, the necessary permits are in the process of accelerated approval to allow this work, but the opposition remains lively.

Expectations towards Mark Carney

Scott Moe said Canada does not want to be in the same situation as Europe, which recently noted its massive dependence on Russian oil and gas.

We should not allow us to happen to us, Canadians, to be dependent on another countrysaid Scott Moe.

Yes, I think that as Canadians, we must have a mature discussion on how we can provide oil and Western Canadian gas to Canadians who live in the center and the east of the country, for our own good … not only for our economic security, but also for our energy safetyhe said.

He adds that he wants to hear Mark Carney, who participates in this meeting, on how to increase port capacity in order to export more to foreign markets and thus reduce Canada’s commercial dependence on the United States.

Prime Minister Alberta Danielle Smith claims that the construction of a pipeline entirely in Canada is Probably a project that should have been carried out for a long time. We should have done it decades ago.

She says she heard Mark Carney say that he wanted to make Canada an energy superpower and she wants him to repeal Nine bad laws Which, according to her, harm the country’s attractiveness for business investments.
