Canadians fleeing the Middle East criticize the government’s response

“Honestly, it was a real roller coaster,” said Maeve McMahon, a Canadian doctoral student at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

McMahon claims to have received information from global business Canada and consular officials, but adds that the aid offered was limited.

“This is really an autonomous evacuation here,” she said, highlighting the government’s instructions to leave Israel by the crossing points to Jordan, without helping to get there.

“Half of my comrades were evacuated by their government, and mine told me that I could take a taxi to go somewhere.”

On Tuesday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand, said that Canada strengthened its consular services in the region to help the more than 6000 Canadians and permanent residents who live in Israel, in an occupied West Bank, as well as the 5,500 living in Iran.

“We have deployed additional consular services throughout the region (and) in all border areas,” she said at the NATO meeting in Hague, in the Netherlands. “We will continue to be present to support Canadians and defend and ensure, to the extent of our means, the security and security of the whole region.”

Global Affairs Canada indicates that the government has helped more than 500 Canadians and permanent residents leave the region, including 100 people who have taken a charter flight from Jordan on Tuesday.

After more than a week of waiting, McMahon said he was able to get a place on a Canadian bus that will transport Tel Aviv citizens on Wednesday to the Jordanian border. She specifies that they will have to cross the border by their own means, but that consular agents will await them on the Jordanian side and transport them to a hotel in Amman.

Ms. McMahon also reserved her return ticket for Ottawa.

“I think it’s time to go home,” she said. “The situation is quite unstable here, it’s scary. We do not know what will happen next. ”
