Russia and North Korea open direct air connections

The two countries have considerably strengthened their relationship in recent months. The first flight is scheduled to land on Monday morning in Pyongyang.

Direct air links between Moscow and Pyongyang open on Sunday, against a background of spectacular strengthening of the links between Russia and North Korea. The first flight must be made by a Nordwind Airlines Boeing 777-200ER at 6:00 p.m. Paris time from Moscovite Airport in Cheremetievo, according to information available on the website of this private airline. The plane is supposed to land in Pyongyang at 9:05 am local time, after an eight hour and five minute journey.

So far, there were no direct commercial flights between the two capitals that are nearly 6,500 kilometers away. According to the Nordwind Airlines online site, nine tickets were still available for this flight on Sunday morning, at a price of 45,000 rubles (around 482 euros) at least. According to the official Russian news agency Tass, the first flight from Pyongyang to Moscow is scheduled for July 29. The Russian Ministry of Transport said that these flights connecting the Russian and North Korean capitals would be carried out once a month.

Military cooperation

The rail links between Moscow and Pyongyang, interrupted in 2020 due to the Cavid-19 pandemic, resumed on June 17. Russia and North Korea have increased their military cooperation in recent years, the North Koreans providing weapons and troops to support the Russian assault against Ukraine in progress since February 2022. The two countries have signed a mutual defense agreement during a visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin in North Korea last year.

A contingent of North Korean soldiers participated, alongside Russian soldiers, in the fighting in the Koursk region against the Ukrainians, who have partially occupied since the summer of 2024 this Russian border territory of Ukraine. Russia announced that it had sent it back last April. The same month, Pyongyang confirmed that it had deployed on the troop front to support the Russian army.
