The Federal Council says no to financial support for a national exhibition around 2030 – RTS.CH

The Confederation will not co -finance a national exhibition which would be held in the 2030s, decided on Wednesday the Federal Council. However, he confirmed his support for such an event. He opened a consultation on a law regulating the framework conditions.

The government has made its decision to do financial non-participation taking into account the current situation of federal finances and negative perspectives in the matter, he said in a statement. It is planned, as part of the 2027 budget relief program, to save money of around 3 billion francs per year from 2027 to regain balance.

Many additional expenses are also expected, especially due to current political projects. The government is therefore expecting overall, in the coming years, restrictions in the accomplishment of the tasks of the Confederation. And to note that to finance special tasks such as the organization of a national exposure would be in contradiction with the need to consolidate expenses.

The Federal Council recalls that Expo.02 had cost the Confederation about a billion francs. He also underlines that other major events that will help strengthen national cohesion are looming by 2040.

The Federal Council confirms, however, that it is favorable to a future national exhibition. He salutes the commitment of current initiatives in this area. But that does not prejudge any commitment to co -financing the Confederation.

New special law

To plan and carry out a national exhibition, responsible organizations are generally dependent on the support of the public authorities. The Federal Council has decided to create a new special law on this subject. The project defines the legal framework conditions of the examination and the selection of request files as well as possible support from the Confederation.

Details should be specified in a prescription as soon as the Federal Council endorses co -financing. On this basis, an ad hoc financing decree should then be subject to parliament.

The consultation period runs until October 16.
