On Tuesday, the OFS suddenly announced 3,000 additional deaths in Switzerland for 2025. The Confederation found the error that has been the figures for several months.

For months, statistics indicated much fewer deaths than usual in Switzerland. Two weeks ago, the Federal Statistical Office (FSA) said they did not understand why. He was now able to solve the mystery:
“This is an error at the code level which specifies the status of stay”
Some people have therefore not been counted among the permanent resident population. They were therefore not taken into account either in death statistics.
This flagrant sub-mortality was detected from November 2024. It was certainly corrected as part of the end of year treatment on March 4, but the deficit was reproduced on 2025: 740 deaths from January 20 to April 27 for a total of 1687 occurrences in the age group under 65. This represented a drop of 31% compared to the years 2017 to 2019.
Tuesday at 2 p.m., the OFS adjusted this figure once and for all: 3013 deaths were added between the beginning of the year and June 8. And, as we should expect, the curve found a normal level.

Among the additional deaths, 697 concerned those under 65, whose curve returned to average values. On its site, the OFS explains that a technical problem occurred between November 11, 2024 and June 19, 2025:
“When importing from the infostar database in the statistics of the natural population movement (Bevnat), deaths were not properly coded”.
They were therefore not counted.
The reason for this hiccup? A new version of the official infostar register. The Federal Civil Status Office activated it last November. The data transmitted to the OFS was badly processed at that time. According to the Office, this computer system is now with additional verification programs.
