Air quality at Fort McMurray has reached alarming levels, with a concentration of fine particles (PM 2.5) reaching the 1700 µg/m³ at times. The smoke observed on Sunday therefore represented a pollution rate almost 70 times higher than this standard.
“In the presence of dense smoke. the health of all people is at risk, regardless of their age or physical condition,” said Environment Canada in a warning form.
Dangerously reduced visibility
In addition to air pollution, this intense smoke also posed an immediate danger on the roads. Diving in such opacity, especially after sunset, becomes extremely perilous. Visibility has remained within a kilometer for a large part of the day.
