$ 14.5 million for student housing in Quebec

Quebec City injects $ 14.5 million for four student housing projects that will partially relieve the crisis that rages, according to the merchant administration.

Of the four projects, three are started or completed. This is the useful, on the Sainte-Foy chemin, which is completed, of another L’Etuperne building, near the Saint-Sacrement hospital, a project for Aboriginal students on the Laval University campus, both under construction, and a useful project in Pointe-aux-Lièvres, to come.

They will all be completed between 2026 and 2028. They will have 819 dwellings and will be able to accommodate 1,000 students, in total. It is a step in the right direction to mitigate the crisis that rages for this clientele, submitted Mayor Bruno Marchand, who still applies that the units would have to be multiplied to stem it.

The mayor stressed that this is the largest investment in student housing in recent decades, because there has not been a major project “for 30 years”, he recalled. “We are catching up.”

Student roaming

The crisis is acute among students, who are struggling to find accommodation in Quebec. Some even live from homelessness, and sleep in their car or are looking for a roof with friends, underlined the advisor responsible for the house, Marie-Pierre Boucher. The situation is not unique in the capital, recalled the mayor; Other cities also suffer it.

Coralie Duchesneau, president of the Cadeul, who represents the students of Laval University, praised the action of the city and governments. The federal and provincial levels have indeed added $ 50 million to the prize pool for these four projects.

Burden

“It will change the lives of several students on the Laval University campus.” Its organization also argues for a remuneration of all internships and a bonus of studies aid, in order to lighten the financial burden of students, who are 64% to devote more than 30% of their rent to their rent.

“The affordable housing for students that are developed are important because they allow young Quebec adults to devote themselves to their studies with more serenity,” said deputy Sylvain Lévesque, on behalf of the Minister of Housing, France-Élaine Duranceau.
