25 years of life spent on a smartphone? This study sounds alarm on the addiction to screens

If they continue on their momentum, British students will spend an average of 25 years riveted on their smartphones. This is the shock observation of a new study carried out in the United Kingdom by Fluid Focus, an application of awards and productivity for screen time, over the first five months of the year.

Solutions against addiction to screens

To see more clearly, the researchers followed the screen time of 1,346 high school students, 198 university students and 1,296 higher education students. They notably spotted that the average screen time increased with age, going from five hours and 12 minutes for college students at six o’clock and 12 minutes for students.

Among the other major lessons in this research, we note that 68 % of students judge that their use of the phone has an impact on their academic results. Quoted by the Daily MailDoctor Paul Redmond, former Liverpool University, comments: “I think what is striking is the way students perceive that it harms their academic results. This awareness that “I could do so much better if I managed to manage this”.

In the same vein, 47 % of young respondents said that their sleep was disrupted by the night use of their smartphones. To remedy this, the expert quotes a new unorthodox technique which consists in attaching elastics around phones. The idea is to question the use and think about each activation drive.

For their part, the authors of the study encourage schools and universities to integrate digital well-being into their strategic programs and plans and to reward students who display healthy digital behavior.

The debate also comes alive in France

As a reminder, this problem also begins to make a lot of talk in France. Recently, Gabriel Attal, former Prime Minister and who displays ambitions for the next presidential election, has published a platform in Le Figaro. He proposes to declare a “State of emergency against screens” with very strict measures.

This is the case with the evaluation of the addiction to screens as soon as entering the sixth and second, the ban on access to social networks at under 15 with age verification, and the imposition of a digital curfew for 15-18 year olds between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. More information on this subject in our previous article here.
