3 times more powerful than the PS5… for the same price? Here is what Sony would reserve

While the PS5 soon blows its fifth candle, the eyes are already turning to the future. A leak has just thrown a pavement in the pond, sketching the portrait of an overpowered PlayStation 6, accompanied by a new portable console, all with a potential outing by 2027-2028.

The PlayStation 5 celebrates its five years this year and rumors around its replacement, the PlayStation 6, accelerate thanks to the revelations of the Youtuber Moore’s Law Is Dead. The latter, which is based on information that would come from an internal presentation of AMD to Sony dating from 2023, announces that the future Sony war machine could offer graphic performance up to three times higher than those of the current PS5. We are talking here about rasterization, the 3D rendering process at the heart of our games. The gain would also be significant compared to the PS5 Pro, with approximately doubled power.

Under the hood, the leak evokes an all-in-one processor (APU) code name “AMD Orion”. This would integrate 8 cores of the future CPU Zen 6 of AMD architecture, coupled with a GRAPHIC CURCH RDNA 5 with 40 to 48 calculation units. The whole would be supported by ultra-fast GDDR7 memory, an explosive combination that would explain the announced power gain, especially on Ray Tracing technology.

An aggressive tariff strategy

But the most surprising in this avalanche of technical details is perhaps the price. Sony would target a launch rate of $ 499, exactly the same as that of the PS5 when it was released. A strategy that would recall the immense success of the PS4, launched at a very competitive price compared to its competitor of the time. By maintaining a floor price for advanced technology, Sony would seek to ensure massive adoption from the first day. Of course, caution remains in order, especially for the European market where prices recently tend to inflate.

Naturally, retrocompatibility with the PS4 and PS5 catalogs would be there, ensuring a smooth transition for players.

Sony’s comeback on the portable market

The other shattering announcement of this leak concerns the development of a new portable console to support the PS6. Far from being a simple streaming accessory, this machine would be a real nomadic console, with characteristics such as a touch screen, haptic vibrations, a double microphone, a microSD port, and even a location for an SSD M.2.

With a power that could compete with the best students on the market such as the Rog Ally X and a video outing via USB-C, this laptop could well mark the return of Sony on a land that he had abandoned since the PS Vita. To achieve this, it would be animated by a chip derived from the same technology as its big sister: 4 Zen 6C cores and 12 to 20 RDNA 5 calculation units, all in a thermal envelope of only 15W. Its price would be between 400 and 500 dollars.

According to the Leaker, the production of the PS6 and its portable version could start in mid-2027, for a planned marketing between the fall of 2027 and the beginning of 2028. Sony obviously confirmed anything and this information, however detailed they may be, must be taken with the tweezers. However, they draw an ambitious and exciting vision for the future of PlayStation.
