A demustication operation will be launched

The New Aquitaine Regional Health Agency announced, this Thursday, July 31, 2025, that a first indigenous case of chikungunya had been detected in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. The infected person would reside in Hendaye and would have circulated in the Donostia region (Saint-Sébastien, Southern Basque Country) for their professional activities. His state of health would not inspire concern to date.

Eliminate larval lodges and adult mosquitoes

ARS indicates that “immediate measures have been implemented to limit any risk of spread”. To avoid the spread of the disease, Demoustication operations will be carried out in several places frequented by the person in Hendaye. They will be carried out, the Saturday August 2 from 10 p.m.specifies the ARS. Objective: “eliminate larval lodges and adult mosquitoes that can transmit the virus”.

In addition, an investigation is underway to “identify people who have presented in the previous weeks or who would currently have symptoms evocative of chikungunya (fever greater than 38.5 ° C, joint pain, rash, fatigue, muscle pain) and inform them about the driving to be held”.

Cross -border collaboration

The management of this cross -border case is also done “in close collaboration between the French and Spanish administrations. Epidemiologists from the Saint-Sébastien Health Department have thus conducted field surveys in order to assess the health risk for the population ”.

As a reminder, chikungunya is transmitted from person to person, only through the bite of a mosquito (tiger mosquito in metropolitan France) infected by the chikungunya virus.
