A future European tax will cost hundreds of euros per year to Belgians for gas, electricity and fuel oil: “the more you consume, the more you pay”

For a family traveling 15,000 km per year by car and heating a well -insulated gas house, the bill would climb around € 170 per year. For a cleaning with two vehicles rolling 30,000 km/year and a mazout dwelling of 200 m² (PEB D), the bill could reach € 600 annually. “”The more we consume, the more we pay“, Summarizes Informationelec.be.

A study also shows that the impact will strongly depend on the price of carbon. At 30 €/T CO₂, the annual increase would be around € 104 for heating of modest households and € 186 for the wealthiest; Transport side, between € 75 and € 145. If the quota is climbing at € 60/T, the heating bill would double: + € 207 for precarious households, + € 368 for the richest, to which would be added € 145 to € 285 for the car.

These amounts worry because almost 30 % of Brussels and Walloons are already in energy precariousness. ETS2 could accentuate inequalities: modest households devote a much higher part of their energy budget.

Belgium will receive around 5.7 billion euros between 2027 and 2030

The EU, however, provides for a climate social fund powered by the sale of quotas. Belgium will receive around 5.7 billion euros between 2027 and 2030, including 25 % will go to this fund. In Brussels, this would represent 76 million per year, including 31 million for direct aid. But these supporters will have to be targeted and rapid, in particular via the expansion of the social rate and renovation bonuses, to prevent the energy transition from being transformed into a social fracture.

In summary, from 2027, the ecological transition will have a tangible cost: between € 170 and € 600 per year depending on the profiles. A measure may be necessary to reduce emissions-it is only only affecting the portfolio that is produced by concrete efforts, unfortunately-, but which requires solid support for vulnerable households.
