A not so winning deal for Donald Trump

ANALYSE – The compromise torn off by the American president could be invalidated in a few weeks by the Supreme Court. And he did not win on all fronts, especially on the regulatory ground.

Donald Trump decided that he had torn off a « bon deal » With the European Union, and Ursula von der Leyen gives him the change. The legal value of “the agreement” is however doubtful. Concluded on the basis of threats of commercial sanctions under a 1977 law on “the economic urgency” which were disputed before the Supreme Court, the compromise could even be invalidated in a few weeks …

It is also, as with the other “deals” more or less officially concluded with the United Kingdom, Japan, Indonesia and Vietnam, out of the question that Congress seizes and pronounces. Besides, its details are not all specified yet. Are wines and alcohols covered? How do we measure the $ 600 billion in investments promised by Europe? Wouldn’t they have been decided without these trade threats? How long is the overall agreement? In three years, do we come back to the previous status quo? …
