A project to produce salmon with bay-trinity arouses hope

The Aquaboréal Baie-Trinity Aquaboréal project has taken a new step. While the Ministry of the Environment considers the impact study submitted by the company for the production of salmon, elected officials and merchants claim that this initiative is highly expected within the municipality.

The mayor of Baie-Trinité, Étienne Baillageon, says that a large majority of the population is favorable. He notices that people are happy to see the fish farm materialize little by little.

According to the mayor, this is a project that will diversify the economy of the North Shore and create new stable jobs in the community.

It is a company that will have a major impact. It is an extremely positive impact of Port-Cartier in Baie-Comeau, at least.

The deputy for the district of René-Lévesque in the National Assembly of Quebec, Yves Montigny, is of the opinion that this is an initiative of great importance for the region.

It is a project in communities that are devitalized, which need economic vitalityhe says.

He adds that this is an innovative project, which consists in raising salmon in pools with a recirculation of water.

The company plans to source water in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, thanks to a desalination system. The fish sludge will be treated with the site, then evacuated from the site after being dehydrated.

Rejoiced traders

It is a project that is still expected for people in the general corner in generalindicates the owner of the Sunny Domaine campsite at the Islets Caribou in Baie-Trinité, Sonia Dubé.

She believes that this project could create long -term jobs.

It is sure it’s good for a place like here […]. It will be able to bring people who will settle, who will allow the establishment of services in a concrete wayobserve-t-elle.

She adds that it is difficult for her to find employees for her business, given the population that is aging in the municipality. Here at the campsite, we need employees and we need customerssays Sonia Dubé.

The owners of the restaurant Les Portes du Golfe in Baie-Trinité, Karine Davignon and Jean-François Desroches, note the same thing. They judge that if the fish farm materializes, more families will come to settle in Baie-Trinité, which will help respond to the lack of labor in the community.

Pending an energy block

The Office of Public Hearings on the Environment (BAPE) will start the public information period in September.

Several stages remain to be crossed before the production of salmon begins, including the allocation by Hydro-Québec to an energy block of 7 megawatts in Aquaboréal.

I await the announcement of the energy block with great enthusiasmsays the mayor of Baie-Trinititis, optimistic that a fish farm will see the light of day in his municipality.

The deputy for René-Lévesque shares his enthusiasm.

Clearly, this is a project that I can’t wait to see. Ads […] will come, I am convincedsays Yves Montigny.

Aquaboréal does not give an interview for the moment and is preparing for the information session of the BAPE September 3, at 7:30 p.m.
