Alcaraz crowned in Cincinnati after the abandonment of Sinner

Carlos Alcaraz won the Cincinnati tennis tournament after the abandonment on Monday in the world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, announced “sick” by the referee, a few days before the start of the United States.

Visibly decreased, the 24-year-old Italian was led 5-0 in the first round when he threw in the towel, offering a first title in Ohio to his great Spanish rival, world No. 2.

The match was interrupted after 23 minutes of play, following the intervention of a sports therapist.

With this result, Alcaraz now presents a 9-5 file against Italian. He also won a 6th title in single this season and a 22nd on the circuit of theATP.

Sinner did not appear at a press conference, but sent a statement to ensure that he would play the internationals of the United States well, whose single tournament begins on Sunday.

I like the Grand Chelem tournaments, these are the most important tournaments of my season and my career. […] The United States will be difficult, but I can’t wait to be there if I am physically and mentally ready.

I’m in [pour Flushing Meadows]my main goal in the United States. Now, the most important thing is recovery.

Sinner, engaged with Katerina Siniakova, did not specify if he would participate in the mixed double from Tuesday.

IGA Swiatek, world no 3, won for the first time at the Cincinnati tournament when it dominated the Italian Jasmine Paolini 7-5 and 6-4.

The 24-year-old Polish is perfectly launched towards the United States internationals, a tournament she won in 2022.

In Ohio, the Polish has raised her 24th trophy on the circuit, the 11th in a WTA 1000 tournament, a category where only Serena Williams have more titles (13).

This performance will allow Swiatek, former world No. 1, to go up to 2nd place in the next WTA ranking, ahead of Coco Gauff, but more than 3000 points behind Aryna Sabalenka.

On Monday, Swiatek managed to overcome a bad start (3-0 Paolini) taking the advantage in the exchange to win the first round.

The two players then exchanged the broken in the second round, which Swiatek was able to conclude from an ace, to keep his immaculate sheet in six duels against Paolini.
