Alert on the increase in HIV/AIDS in Lubero: the territorial administrator calls for an urgent response

Colonel Alain Kiwewa, administrator of the territory of Lubero, sounds the alarm in the face of the worrying increase in the prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS in his jurisdiction. In an interview, on Monday, July 14, he said he had transmitted information to the provincial governor, General-Major Kakule Somo Evariste, as well as to NGOs engaged in the fight against this pandemic, so that urgent measures are taken to curb its propagation.

According to data collected from the Lubero General Reference Hospital, the situation has worsened over the years:

In 2023: out of 2,617 patients, 43 positive cases (1.6 %)
In 2024: on 1,592 patients, 83 positive cases (5.2 %)
From January to May 2025: out of 1,572 patients, 76 positive cases (4.8 %)

At the Kasalala hospital center, out of an average of 990 patients, 120 positive cases were recorded, confirming an increase in the prevalence rate in the area.

Insufficiency of antiretrovirals

Colonel Kiwewa also deplores antiretroviral deficiency, essential for the management of people living with HIV.

“We also found that there is the insufficiency of antiretrovirals,” he complained.

This shortage compromises the efforts to combat the pandemic and exposes patients to serious complications.

A call to action

Faced with this situation, the territorial administrator calls on the health authorities and the humanitarian workers to take urgent measures to slow down its HIV spread in the Lubero area.
