Alpine skiing: left by his wife, Thomas Tumler lost ten kilos

Last February, Thomas Tumler was becoming vice-champion of the giant world in Saalbach (Austria) and then signed the greatest success of his career. A few weeks earlier, he won his first World Cup victory at Beaver Creek. Always in giant.

So at the top of his sports career, the 35 -year -old skier, however, experienced a much more difficult period on the private level. Because his marriage to his wife Svenja, whom he had married in June 2023, ended in a completely unexpected way.

“She told me that she had no more feelings for me – it happened from nowhere,” said Thomas Tumler, to Schweizer Illustrator magazine. The pain was so deep that the Grison lost ten pounds. “I hid. Sometimes I was simply lying in my bed and I was crying all day. ”

Until touching the bottom. “In the middle of a ski hike, I collapsed and I collapsed in the snow,” he said. The native of Samnaun finally glimpsed the sun during the ceremony dedicated to the “Grison sportsman of the year”, by attending videos of the highlights of his season. “This is where I finally realized: all that was me!”

Today, Thomas Tumler lives in Lachen, in the canton of Schwyz. He feels good and wants to stay there. During the summer, he trained almost daily in a weight room in Einsiedeln. So that, according to his own saying, he has never been so in shape on the physical level. And mentally? The Germanic has found some stability. “I have never had so many friends,” he admitted, grateful.

Sportingly, the winter of 2024/2025 marked a turning point in the career of Thomas Tumler since he obtained his best results. But why did he have to wait until he was 35 to break his glass ceiling? “Perhaps I had to learn that I should not be the fastest in training, but in the race.”

One thing is certain: its next goals are already set with the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina as well as the 2027 World Championships in Crans-Montana. “I don’t just want to participate. Gold would be a great reward. But, of course, everything will start from scratch to Sölden (Editor’s note: October 26, opening giant of the next World Cup season).»

Intense next months, which do not prevent him from also dreaming of a new start to the private level. “I always want to start a family one day. Marry me again? Maybe. If it’s the right person, I don’t exclude anything. ”
