The United States announced on Tuesday withdrawn from Unesco, the United Nations of Education, Science and Culture. Washington had already left the organization under the leadership of Donald Trump in 2018 before returning in June 2023.
“The continuation of the United States’s participation in UNESCO is not in the national interest,” said state department spokesperson Tammy Bruce, believing that the agency has been biased against Israel and promotes “divisive” causes.
UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay said Tuesday “deeply regrets” the decision of the American president. “As regrettable as it was, this announcement was expected and Unesco prepared for it,” said Ms. Azoulay on Tuesday in a statement.
“Unfactible support for UNESCO, a universal protector of science, ocean, education, culture and world heritage,” wrote French President Emmanuel Macron on network. “The withdrawal of the United States will not weaken our commitment alongside those who have this fight,” he added.
