anger after the fire caused by a barbecue in the Jura

The mayor of Orgelet did not chew his words after the fire who broke out on Friday August 15 on the heights of Bellecin, on the edge of the Lac de Vouglans. “It’s a bit of anger dominates. Barbecues are prohibited. It is not for lack of prevention … Even me, when I am on the lake, I intervene to report people who are unconscious, “said Jean-Paul Duthion, mayor of Orgelet (without label), at the microphone of France 3 Franche-Comté.

The elected official says he is all the more shocked that those responsible have fled : “I would have liked people to stay there, at least to take responsibility for their actions. And for once, it’s a shame because they got off … “, he reacted again, still with France 3.

A fire triggered by a barbecue on the ground

The gendarmes present on the spot hardly had any doubt: the claim started from a improvised barbecueplaced on the ground between a few stones, in the middle of the dry grass. Around 2 p.m. this Friday, August 15, the flames quickly spread, in a context of high heat and drought alert.

Thirty firefighters from the Lons-le-Saunier, Champagnole, Poligny, Orgelet, Clairvaux and Moirans barracks were deployed with a dozen vehicles. The wind, blowing towards the lake and the road, fortunately limited the spread to the neighboring forest. In total, approximately 2,200 m² of vegetation have been reduced to ashes.

Memoir still keen of the big fire of 2022

This fire revived a painful memory: in August 2022, the south of Lake Vouglans had experienced an unprecedented scale, destroying near 1 000 hectares of vegetation and resulting in the evacuation of residents.

“I thought it was going to be a vector of communication, but that is not yet enough … I think you have to go even further in communication,” insisted Jean-Paul Duthion on France 3.

Moreover, this Monday, August 18, about fifty firefighters are fighting in the same sector against another fire declared the day before on Sunday on a cliff crest between Moirans-en-Montagne and Villards d’Héia.

“It’s very serious”: residents also indignant

The day after the loss of August 15, the walkers met by the lake by our colleagues did not return. “It’s serious, it’s very serious. It is unconsciousness … just like the waste lying around everywhere. Fines would be needed, ”reacted a regular at the beaches, interviewed by France 3 Franche-Comté.

The prefecture of the Jura, however, recalled, from August 13, that all fire on the ground and any wild barbecue were strictly prohibitedespecially in periods of drought. “Wild barbecues and all fire in the great outdoors are strictly prohibited. Organize your barbecues only in secure spaces, ”warned the prefecture of the Jura in a press release on August 13.
